So, apparently, my new „late 2016“ MacBook Pro with Touch bar does have some kind of audio in despite having heard otherwise and despite the fact that Apple does not list this in their tech specs.
Take a look at the System Preferences‘ Sound pane and select the „Input“ tab. This is how it looks before plugging in an external microphone or headset:
Ralf Stockmann from German podcaster forum sendegate.de posted an excellent article on how to use the cheap but brilliant Superlux HMC660X (Affiliate Link pro Ultraschall) headset directly with an iPhone or iPad here and apparently it works on the new MacBook Pro, too, without a flaw! ???
This is how macOS’s Sound Settings look after plugging it in:
And in macOS’s Audio-MIDI-Settings app you can see it as well:
It’s even capable of 48kHz as well as 44.1kHz.
It works fine in DAW Reaper which I use with the fabulous Ultraschall plugin for recording our (German) „iOS produktiv“ podcast.
This is the HMC660 setup with two adapters (this one first and then this one):

I tried this adapter on my MB Pro with touch bar with an external XLR mic but it doens’t work. Can you please tell me if I have to set up something via software? Thanks in advance
steve
if the mic requires phantom power this will not work
luvletter
does this support AUX Output on Mixer (Line in)?
Tobias
note: the „Macbook 2016“ does not support line in! Only the „Late 2016“ does…..

This is no „audio in“, but microphone in – just as expected when you put in your earpods.
