So, apparently, my new „late 2016“ MacBook Pro with Touch bar does have some kind of audio in despite having heard otherwise and despite the fact that Apple does not list this in their tech specs.
Take a look at the System Preferences‘ Sound pane and select the „Input“ tab. This is how it looks before plugging in an external microphone or headset:
Ralf Stockmann from German podcaster forum sendegate.de posted an excellent article on how to use the cheap but brilliant Superlux HMC660X (Affiliate Link pro Ultraschall) headset directly with an iPhone or iPad here and apparently it works on the new MacBook Pro, too, without a flaw! 😄👍👍

It’s even capable of 48kHz as well as 44.1kHz.
